Wine Country Helicopters, based in Napa Valley California, announces its appointment as the Official Helicopter Service of the AMGEN Tour of California.
“We are very pleased to provide this service to the AMGEN Tour” states Wayne Lackey, President of Wine Country Helicopters. “We are proud that the Tour has chosen us for this spectacular event in California”.
The Tour is a week long “rolling festival” through California that will become one of the nation’s largest and most recognized annual special events. This international race will feature 16 professional cycling teams from around the world, including local favorite Jelly Belly Jelly Beans in Fairfield, for the highest prize purse in North America.
The Tour starts in San Francisco on February 19, and ends up in Redondo Beach on February 26. The AMGEN Tour of California brings the drama and excitement of a professional bicycle stage race to the spectacular California coast. The world’s top teams will compete over an 8 day, 600 mile race on a route that includes the California redwoods, Wine Country and the Pacific Coast.
“There are more recreational cyclists in the United States”, continues Lackey, “ than skiers, golfers, and tennis players COMBINED. Cycling is consistently ranked one of the country’s top three participation sports, and California leads the nation in cycling participation. This race has a real broad base.”
It is expected that over 1 million spectators will attend the inaugural Tour of California, with millions more via live television broadcast.
The Tour will also raise funds for cancer care and treatment. Amgen, the tour’s title sponsor, will work with The Wellness Community and Team Discovery member George Hincapie through their new Breakaway from Cancer initiative. This initiative will raise awareness and funds for services and programs that help cancer patients and caregivers.
“It is a great honor to be associated with such a professional organization. They are working hard for a very worthy cause, one that can use as much help and attention as possible”, continued Lackey. “We’re happy to play a small part in this great undertaking”.
“I am thrilled that San Francisco will be the starting point for the inaugural AMGEN Tour of California”, says San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. “ We are excited to be part of this premiere professional cycling event and warmly welcome these world caliber athletes”.
Santa Rosa Mayor Jane Bender continues “ Santa Rosa is proud to be the Northern most Host City for the 2006 AMGEN Tour of California. We’re an avid cycling community- the home base of pro cyclist Levi Leipheimer- and we truly embody the healthy California lifestyle.
